Best strategy for Large Shape files?

We have a .net app to which we would like to add a minimum of GIS functionality. We ar eusing shapefiles. Some of the shapefiles are 200MB with 350000 polygon features.

This file in particular takes about 60 seconds to load in the app and balloons the memory working set from less than 100MB to over 1 GB.

The shapefile has .sbn and .sbx files, but I am not sure these are able to be used in the Map Control. IS that correct?

What strategies exist for being able to use Dotspatial with these large shapefiles?

As far as I know, .sbn and .sbx files are not used in DotSpatial.
