DBF Text Field Size

Apr 14, 2013 at 9:50 PM
I have created a point featureset with multiple populated attributes and successfully set the text columns' maxwidth property in the featureset datatable; however on save [fs.SaveAs("F:\...\test.shp", true);] the resulting dbf file has all text fields set to a field size of 254. This apparently results in a dbf file size of over 120 mb as opposed to 16 mb utilizing the same input data and a previous solution utilizing the MapWinGIS.Field width setting when creating the shapefile.

The output files from both solutions include just over 41,000 points (with multiple attribute fields) and there are no apparent differences other than the field size for the text fields.

Is there a way to control output field sizes that I'm overlooking, or perhaps a different approach to use in creating the shapefile where the width can be set?

Any suggestions appreciated....

Looks like you may have found a legitimate bug in DotSpatial. Feel free to post this on the issue tracker. If you find the code in DotSpatial.Data that needs to be updated that would be great too. - Dan
