Hi Bruce,

I  have been using the ZIp and Ship Shape File feature found in Geoservers WFS abilities.  For small datasets it works pretty fast, larger datasets howevere do take some time to process.

Hope this helps

Hi Bruce,

GeoServer can publish data in zip file format.  The following is the http call I make to extract data from GEOServer then receive the response as shape files zipped up (.shp. .dbf. shx .prj):

http://<YOUR IP ADDRESS TO GEOSERVER>/geoserver/wfs?service=WFS&version1.1.0&request=GetFeature&typeName=<The DATA SET YOU WANT>&outputFormat=shape-zip

I use the System.Net.WebClient library to make the http call.

The MapWndow source code files comtain a dll named Iconic.Zip.  I use this library to extract the shape file from the received ZIP file, which I then load into MapWindow

I have set this up to work in a thread giving me the ability to work with the Map as data continues to get loaded.

Perhaps this solution is a little cumbersome - but I am able to leverage GeoServer Feature Service with out writing to much code.

Hope this helps
