Project Management Plans for 2012

Dec 16, 2011 at 11:43 PM

Thanks to all of you for your awesome contributions to the DotSpatial project this past year. We've seen some incredibly cool things happen including the release of MapWindow 6 (work in progress) and HydroDesktop 1.3 built on DS. Others are building commercial and other open source projects on DS now with some success!

I have three awesome plans for early 2012:

  1. We will release (finally!) a "Version 1.0" of DotSpatial. It will look essesntially like what you see in the source code now, but perhaps with some more fixes. (No major refactoring.) And, most importantly, we will update all the documentation and tutorials to reflect this version.
  2. Because of some very clearly articulated disadvantages of Mercurial (see for the discussion) that have made this a real Barrier-to-entry for some potential collaborators, I have decided that we need to move the code repository to the TFS/SVN service on CodePlex. This is justified because: TFS clients are freely available and well supported by Microsoft and TFS is fully integrated with CodePlex; and that the casual user can still interact with the TFS repo over the SVN Bridge for simple commits OR by simply downloading the source code tree and posting a patch on an open issue.
  3. In January I propose to create a roadmap for the project and would be open to suggestions from you all regarding what could/should be on that roadmap.

We are investigating a couple of things before we can put dates on 1 and 2.

I think this may be concerned:

Happy new year to everybody!

Hi Tummi. We will release 1.0 and then start thinking more actively about restructuring parts of the code for a 2.0 release. We should plan to separate Windows forms from business logic as much as possible for 2.0 as you suggest.

Dan has informed me that the source control system will be switched to TFS next week. We are expecting that our source history and work items can be preserved.

We'll be providing a tutorial to help developers get started. You can consult or in the meantime.

When the transition is complete developers will be able to find connection information on the Source Code tab.
