On-the-Fly Reprojection of Large Shapefile

I have a large shapefile (U.S. Hydrologic landscape units, downloaded from: http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/dsdl/hlrshape.zip

Size of the shp is 60 MB (plus a 10MB dbf file). It has 47500 shapes. Projection of the file is Lambert_Azimuthal_Equal_Area

Adding the shapefile as a layer to an empty map works fine.

However, if I first add a feature layer in geographic (WGS_1984) coordinates and then add the large shapefile, I get a "Projection Mismatch" message. If I click "yes", some calculation seems to occur but the added layer is not drawn in the map.

Is this a limitation with regards to shapefile size, or is this an error in the Lambert_Azimuthal_Equal_Area --> WGS_1984 reprojection formulas?
